Oleander
"Georgia on My Mind.Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" ...
is the theme for the Oleander District 2003-2005. Similar themes are by June Wood, 38th President of NGC, Inc. "Preserving the Past, Forging the Future" . Also GCG, 41st President, Jaydee Ager , whose theme is "Georgia on My Mind" for her term as our State President.

As we celebrate 75 years this year, we have a proud past with many accomplishments. We still have TODAY, and we must be conscious of the future to continue our mission of beautification, conservation, and education.

June Wood, NGC President , states in her acceptance speech: "We must preserve those aspects of our organization that are successful today, but we must be continuously searching for improvement, and be willing to make changes when change is necessary. There is nothing to be gained by promoting change just for the sake of making change, but we must always be willing to COURAGEOUSLY and BOLDLY embrace change when it is needed. Being locked into a mentality of always doing things a certain way only because 'Ihis is the way we've always done it" is one sure way to assure that as an organization we will have no viable future.

We, as a District, need to become open-minded and willing to make changes. We should change our ideas and attitudes to insure our future in The Garden Club of Georgia.

BETH KENNEDY,
DISTRICT DIRECTOR
Brenda Griner, Newsletter Editor

Caroline Hembel Beard,

Once again its time to start preparing for our Fall District Meeting COUNTRY STORE . This is our District's only money making project, and we need your enthusiasm and support to make this year's store the best ever.

Each club and Council is asked to bring a minimum of $25 in items to be sold or make a donation of $25. If you choose to make a donation, please make checks payable to OLEANDER DISTRICT and mail to this chairman. If you choose to bring items for sale, please have them PRICED and in the store as early as possible. We will have someone there to check in your items or donations. Homemade items sell best. We have time to prepare if we start now. A few suggested items are: Plants, seeds, bulbs, flower arranging items, dried flowers, weeds and seed pods, bird houses and feeders, decorated flower pots, baskets, Christmas & Halloween items, wreaths, wood craft items, knitted and crocheted items, aprons, and all baked goods and home canned items such as jams, jellies, pickles, etc.

Winter Garden Shelf
RAFFLE! RAFFLE! RAFFLE! - This year we plan to raffle a HUGE, beautiful basket of garden items too numerous to list here. We will also raffle a BIG WREATH already decorated. Let's get out and SELL..SELL..SELL those tickets!! Please mail checks and raffle tickets to me before October 20. If you need more tickets, please feel free to make copies. You do not need to be present to win, but there will have to be someone present from your hometown or a club that can pick it up for you. Both items are too large to mail.

See YOU in Savannah on October 30th!

Oleander District has planned several flower shows for 2003-2004. Please make every effort to support those that are near you. If you would like to have a flower show in you club, read the rules in the new 2003 Flower Show Handbook. You'll find it much simpler than before. Write your schedule, send two copies to me. I'll make suggestions and send it back. Then you will send two copies on to Jeanne Heyser, State Chairman. You are then ready to go.

    • The purpose of the program is to aid those areas around the world who have experienced Natural Disasters.
    • MONETARY GIFTS toward the restoration of garden related areas may be made available for projects undertaken by garden club members.
    • APPLICATIONS are available upon request.

Donate $25 by March I and receive a certificate at the State Convention.

Last year $17,000 was awarded to victims of natural disasters. Five clubs in Oleander District made contributions to the Natural Disaster Fund in 2002. This is a worthy cause and an easy way to earn a Certificate.
