Informed citizenry is key to resolving the complex watershed problems in every state. While we have effective means to conserve water and the ability to implement effective watershed restoration programs, before we as citizens can make wise decisions about "water rights,' 'water permits," "interbasin transfers' and the myriad problems facing us and our elected officials, we must understand how the hydrologic system functions. And we must make sure that those whom we elect to represent us also understand the issues at hand and act on our wishes. Now all we need is your help in attending this workshop to learn how to save our water supply. Education is the key to success in any program.

The FLOW~ Program consists of two components:

  • Watershed Education
  • Watershed Restoration
and The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. has established a restricted endowment to fund the program in order to provide "seed' money and a "match" when writing future grants. GCG's new program is led by a FLOW-Team of twenty-four members who work with our volunteers across the state to increase our outreach and effectiveness in local communities.

DESCRIPTION of a TYPICAL HFH PROJECT

Garden clubs can design landscape plans, provide plants, provide funding, and give a program on caring for the yard to new HFH homeowner. The landscape plans need not be complicated.
  • Take a ride to the site of the home and using a tape measure, DRAW A SKETCH of the front yard including the location of windows, doors, porches, driveways and sidewalks, existing trees, power lines, water lines, etc.
  • TAKE A PHOTO for easy reference.
  • CONTACT YOUR COUNTY AGENT for guidance on selection of plants & MASTER GARDENERS for technical help; involve LANDSCAPE DESIGN CONSULTANTS & GARDENING CONSULTANTS in your area.
  • Landscape HFH homes with hardy and disease resistant, native and blooming trees, shrubs and plants that attract butterflies . Planting blooming trees will promote the goal of NGC President June Wood's...'America's-A-Bloom".
  • Don't forget the need to amend the soil by purchasing composted material and the mulch and fertilizer to complete the project.
  • A very good thing is to give the new homeowner yard tools such as shovel, rake, pruner or even a lawn mower.
  • Use your imagination in seeking tax-deductible donations for this worthy project.

Please let Linda Abbott and Rosemary Maulden know of any Plant 4 Humanity projects your garden club or council have plans for, in process of, or completed. Please include a brief description - how many trees, shrubs, and plants planted, equipment purchased, education of new homeowner, fundraising, etc.
*** This information needs to be returned to Rosemary Maulden by Feb. 5, 2004. ***

  • LeConte Woodmanston supporters, trustees, and board members are excited about the accomplishments of the past few years, but all are anticipating future improvements. So, LeConte Woodmanston Plantation needs your continued support! A replica slave cabin, rest rooms, new planting, and plant identifications are realized thanks to contributions and hard work by Foundation friends and members. More is to be done; foremost, is the planned horse barn which would offer space for meetings and educational programs.

The remaining 64 acres of the once 3300 acre LeConte Woodmanston rice plantation is an historical legacy right here in our own Oleander District. The clubs of Oleander District are being asked to support this preservation effort 100% by contributing $25 by March I to receive a certificate at convention. Of course, any amount, at any time would be gratefully accepted! Please consider making this donation a yearly expense in your club budgets.

      Mail donations to:
        LeConte Woodmanston Foundation
        P, 0, Box 179, Midway, GA 31320.

GARDEN GATEWAYS
Beverly Taylor, Editor
2905 Meadowview Dr., Columbus, GA 31906-1236
Phone: 706-327-8331 / email: bstcsg@cs.com

This editor would like to invite you to send news of your events and activities directly to her at the above address, which is also on page one of every issue of the publication. We encourage your clubs also to send by "snailmail" a picture of your event for which you would like publicity. It is Staff policy not to accept photos with any email (digital images) because, frequently, the quality of the photo does not transmit clear enough for reproduction in the publication.

Some Suggestions:

  1. Write your copy with as much information within it as possible. Please advise the clubs that the copy will be edited, but that all the information that you can include within it will be helpful and make editing easier and the Staff will be sure to include the most important information. Editing is necessary because of the size of the publication.
  2. As for PHOTOS, the Staff will appreciate the club photographer not “lining people up” like birds on a telephone wire. She/He can stagger the line (if a line is necessary). If a shot includes a tea table or the like in it, be certain not to photograph the table with the guests and members behind the table - the photo will show the table very well but not the guests and members! Photos cannot be returned.
  3. All articles and photos should carry the name and location of the club and should also indicate the name, address and phone number of the contact person. The Editor frequently calls the contact person to clarify the article or ask for more information about the event.
ENCOURAGE THE CLUBS IN YOUR DISTRICT to contribute to Garden Gateways! Call me or email any time that I can be of assistance to them.
