AMERICA'S A-BLOOM
Connie Ewing, State Chairman
email: cewing@surfsouth.com

America's A-Bloom is our new national project. President June Wood wants every garden club member to plant at least one flowering tree. There is a form to be sent to National that we will use to evaluate the total number of flowering trees planted in Georgia during the next two years. See Garden Gateways for more details. The GDOT has several projects involving planting flowering trees. One of them is on I-85 around the airport in Atlanta . Another is on I-185 from Columbus to I-85 where they are working on a master plan for the corridor. A third area is on I-75 at the Florida border and at the Lowndes County Welcome Center . The GDOT would like to have any group that wishes to plant anything on the state right of way to let them first review the plan for appropriate setbacks, plant choices, and safety concerns. A brochure about flowering trees better suited for certain areas will be available . A new "Horticultural Study Lesson on Flowering Trees" will be available through NGC's Member Services. Remember to encourage each club member to plant at least one flowering tree and be sure to document all plantings so Georgia will lead the nation! For any more information contact Connie Ewing, State Chairman.

  • VOLUNTEER NEEDED: One person from Oleander District to do a design in the lobby at the Crown Plaza Ravinia on April 21, 2004 for the State Convention. The theme for the convention is "Garden Glitter" . The spotlight and theme for the Oleander District is "Outstanding Oleanders" . There will be columns, platforms, and pedestals for our use. It is requested that this be an educational endeavor displaying some of the new designs such as Panel, Illuminary, Reflective, Op Art, etc. The designer's name and type design will be placed on a card with the design.

GARDEN CENTERS

This committee would like to get an accurate count of all the Garden Centers in the Oleander District. This not only includes an updated registration form from each sponsoring club but also a current picture or photo of each center. We will be doing a mail out to each club president later this year in this effort. We hope that if you are not currently sponsoring a Garden Center, whether an Activity Center or a Mini-Center, you will consider establishing one. Your local public library would be an ideal place to start a mini-center.
